Does God exist and who is He?

It’s often the first question when someone pushes back on the concept of God. If everything needs a cause, what caused God?

The key is understanding what kind of being God is. Everything we observe in the universe depends on something else to exist. But God, by definition, is not dependent or contingent. He is eternal and self-existent, meaning He has always existed with no beginning and no end. He isn’t part of the created order but is instead the source of it.

The question “who made God?” assumes God is like every other created thing that needs a creator. But that’s like asking “What’s north of the North Pole?” The question doesn’t apply. If God were created, He wouldn’t be God; He would just be another creature.

The Bible describes God as the “I AM”. This is a name pointing to a pure, self-existing being. He doesn’t owe His existence to anything or anyone. Philosophers call this being “necessary”. Everything that exists only because He does.

This isn’t a philosophical dodge; it’s a logical requirement. Something must be eternal and uncaused at the foundation of all existence otherwise nothing would exist at all. Christians believe that eternal foundation is a personal God, not a mindless void.
