Can I know what I truly believe?
What is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?
Related questions
We covered the definition in the previous answer but this question often comes from a different and more personal place: “I said something terrible about God in anger. I’ve had dark, intrusive thoughts about the Spirit. Have I done it?”
The short answer, offered with genuine care: almost certainly not.
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus described it, is not an outburst of anger, a moment of doubt, or an unwanted thought that horrified you. It is a deliberate, sustained, eyes-open rejection of Jesus. It is a permanent choice to call God’s work evil while knowing better. It’s the sin of those whose hearts have become so hardened that they are beyond caring about God at all.
People who have committed this sin are not worried about it. They are not searching for reassurance. They are not searching for clarity hoping to find they haven’t gone too far. The very anxiety that drives someone to ask this question is evidence of a conscience that is still alive and responsive to the Holy Spirit. That is the opposite of what blasphemy of the Spirit looks like.
Intrusive thoughts, including disturbing thoughts about God, are a common experience, especially for those who struggle with anxiety or OCD. They are not the unforgivable sin. Naming them and bringing them to God is itself an act of faith.
